Actress Bette Midler criticized people who are refusing to wear face masks in order to make a “political statement.”
Midler shared her criticism Wednesday on Twitter.
“It’s not the leadership,” she first tweeted Tuesday. “It’s the people.”
The leadership sucks bigly, but people refusing to wear masks as a “political statement” is just demented. Do we or do we not want to have a full blown Depression? That’s what we’re gonna have if no one is able to go back to work because there’s no social compliance. https://t.co/vp7P94yzRF

“The leadership sucks bigly, but people refusing to wear masks as a ‘political statement’ is just demented,” Midler added Wednesday. “Do we or do we not want to have a full blown Depression? That’s what we’re gonna have if no one is able to go back to work because there’s no social compliance.”
The “Hocus Pocus” actress also encouraged her followers to wear a mask.
“As one of my favorites posted: #MaskitOrCasket!” Midler said. (RELATED: Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Celebrities Team Up To Remind You To Wear A Mask)
Her criticism comes after coronavirus cases have spiked in several states across the U.S., according to a report published by The New York Times. The U.S. as a whole reported a total of 49,932 new cases of coronavirus Wednesday marking the fifth day of record breaking positive cases numbers.
Meanwhile, celebrities have teamed up to encourage their followers and fans to wear face masks as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“CDC recommends that people wear cloth face coverings in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain,” the CDC website said.
