The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday issued a major recall on General Mills flours due to the potential presence of salmonella.

The voluntary recall by the FDA and General Mills come just under a month after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an investigation notice over an outbreak of salmonella linked to flour products in late March. At least 12 illnesses and three hospitalizations were linked to the outbreak, and the investigation remains active, according to the CDC.

“Most people reported eating raw dough or batter made with flour before they got sick,” the CDC continued. “Flour was the only common ingredient in the raw dough or batter people reported eating.”

The products under the recall include the brand’s Gold Medal Unbleached and Bleached All Purpose Flour with “better if used by” dates of March 27, 2024 and March 28, 2024. Both the smaller and larger-sized bags are part of the recall, as seen in product images shared by the FDA. Consumers have been asked to thoroughly check their pantries and remove all products that meet this description, the FDA noted. Those who have to throw away products have also been told to contact the General Mills Consumer Relations team at the number listed in the recall posting.
