Footage captured Sunday shows the horrifying moment a truck driver and his son were stuck dangling over an Interstate bridge.
A portion of Interstate 44 near Oklahoma City was closed Sunday morning after a tractor-trailer crashed through the guard rail and hung over the side of the bridge with two passengers still inside, according to KOCO. The huge vehicle lost control after someone else on the road cut the driver off, the outlet reported, citing local fire crews.
Video shared by KMBC 9 on Youtube shows the rescue in progress, with firefighters seemingly hanging off the side of the cab while it dangled off the bridge at a 90-degree angle.
“The driver, he did tell us that somebody had cut him off. And with the roadways yesterday, the rainfall, it didn’t take much for this large vehicle to lose control,” Oklahoma City Fire Department member Scott Douglas told KOCO. Officials said firefighters are trained to act quickly in such dangerous situations, but the wet weather conditions forced them to be more methodical in their rescue efforts. “We just had to be more cautious and more slow with the rainfall because the ladder they were walking on to evacuate the semi was slick, too,” Douglas continued. “So, we took extra time with the footing being a little bit in case our footing slipped. We just took extra time extricating these victims yesterday.”
The father and son managed to escape the cab without any injury, KOCO reported. A portion of the bridge’s edge remained exposed as of Monday.
