The National Weather Service issued a series of tornado alerts on Thursday for parts of America not typically plagued by the extreme weather phenomenon.

The NWS and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast a concerning series of thunderstorms, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes for parts of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Connecticut on Thursday night. These areas are expected to still be under marginal warnings on Friday and through the weekend. The region is already dealing with a series of deadly flash floods.

Counties in Colorado were also hit with tornado warnings on Thursday night, with the potential for a number of them to strike through Friday, NWS noted. Branson and Trinchera were under tornado warnings until 10 p.m. MDT.

While there is typically an average of 53 tornadoes per year in Colorado, their presence in New England states is extremely rare, according to data from World Population Review. A majority of tornadoes in the U.S. occur in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana and other neighboring states in an area colloquially known as Tornado Alley. In May 2023, more than 5 million people were under a serious tornado watch as winter storms battered the nation. By June, a number of people had been killed as the extreme weather struck parts of Texas and Mississippi.
