A grandmother in Ohio was charged with intentionally shooting her 6-month-old granddaughter Saturday, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

Mia D. Harris, 43, was charged with three counts of felonious assault for the deliberate shooting of a baby, Butler County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Butler County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an emergency call around 1:50 a.m. The baby girl, whose identity remains undisclosed, was rushed to UC West Chester Hospital for urgent care.

Harris reportedly fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter. In addition to the shooting, Harris is also accused of attacking other family members during the incident, according to the criminal complaint filed in the Butler County Area 2 Court. She allegedly fired at several relatives before pointing the gun on the child. “During the incident Harris shot at several family members before intentionally shooting the child,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in the release. “The child remains in critical condition at this time.”

“It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose. This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I’ve ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby. What makes it even worse is this is the baby’s grandmother,” Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones told Fox 19. “She went and shot this child and doesn’t appear to have any remorse whatsoever. I feel sorry for the baby, the family, everybody that’s dealing with this. The doctors, the life squad people, the deputies, everybody. This is as bad as it gets.”

“The baby is hanging onto life as we speak. It’s in God’s hands now. We should all pray for this 6-month-old baby,” the sheriff added, according to Fox 19. Harris is currently being held on a $1.5 million bond, according to Local News 12.
