Famous singer FKA Twigs is speaking out after her semi-nude Calvin Klein ad was banned in the United Kingdom.
The British singer slammed “double standards” in the industry after the Advertising Standards Authority pulled the plug on her new campaign with the fashion giant.
Twigs, whose real name is Tahliah Barnett, posed nude for the ad with a shirt held across her body. All the essentials were covered, but that proved to be too much for the ASA.
“I can’t help but feel there are some double standards here. so to be clear… I am proud of my physicality and hold the art i create with my vessel,” she wrote to her Instagram page.

The ASA said it received two complaints from the public and concluded that the ad framed Twigs as a “stereotypical sexual object, according to The Guardian. The authority went on to say that the “image’s composition placed viewers’ focus on the model’s body rather than on the clothing being advertised.”
Calvin Klein described Twigs’ ad as “natural and neutral” with “a progressive and enlightened message.”

Twigs offered a similar reaction.
“I do not see the ‘stereotypical sexual object’ that they have labelled me. I see a beautiful strong woman of colour whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine, in light of reviewing other campaigns past and current of this nature,” she posted.
The singer also addressed the cultural component of the ad by saying she was inspired by the “standards of women like Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt and Grace Jones who broke down barriers of what it looks like to be empowered and harness a unique embodied sensuality.”
